Snatchy throttle fix

Good comments!
I had a Gladius which was a bit snatchy but after a few rides never even noticed.
I look at the throttle response as 'responsive' and not snatchy. I love tthe B mode and use that as my main setting.Smooth, fun and economical. Should i want to ride with a bit more urgency then Std mode will be flicked with my thumb. Should I want a real blast then A mode will be used.
The 'snatchiness' isn't a problem if you are aware of the bikes power and treat it with respect. Something for everyone!
After all, you wouldn't get in a car and stamp down on an accelerator. Keep it smoooooth!

I saw a YT vid from an Aussie guy who thought the "snatchy throttle" comments tended to come from riders that are not familiar with bikes that have flat torque curves and a lot of low rpm torque.

I had a look at that dash mixture adjust thing, I have left mine at 0 for now on each cylinder as it was as default, once the first service is done I may well play a little to see if it can smooth things a little, the idle for example does seem rather on the lean side to me, when the warranty is up that cat block is coming out too! easey peasey to open up the box smash it out and weld up again.

A guy in the US had plans to modify standard exhausts but found that the 09 system is a nightmare to try and open up - lots of internal welding to try to break.

The snatchy throttle hasn't bothered me too much... until I took the bike to my first (mini) track day, last week.
(I say mini, because it's really a Karting track that's being used for motorcycles :(, it's all we have in this country. You're limited to about 2nd-3rd gear, and can get up to about 90kmh on the fastest straight. But still it's fun to practice cornering, and improve your technique.)

The bike was loads of fun around the track, handled really good IMO. The 'A' mode is a blast, every time I got down to 1st gear, I'd shoot out of the corner with a nice little wheelie ;)

The only thing that was a bit annoying, is the snatchy throttle. When approaching a corner fast, I close the throttle, break hard and then want to open the throttle just a bit to get that little steady maintenance throttle, which keeps you steady around the corner. I found it hard to accurately open the throttle just enough, without getting that jerky feeling. Towards the end of the day I realized, that I'll probably have to use my clutch more than I'm used to, to smooth the transition from off to on throttle. I guess I can get used to it, kind of like performing a pseudo gear change on every throttle off/on, but I haven't had to do it in the past with my previous bikes.

So to follow up on what's been asked a few months back:
What sort of changes did you get. Does it feel like you have lost/gained power. Has the snatchy throttle gone.

Can anyone confirm that the C0 reprogramming does indeed help the throttle snatchiness?

Hi relz, I had the same issue on corners (and over trough ground) Where you want to be kinda subtle with the throttle. Its not an issue now that Ive spent more time on her.
I think its worth persevering with it. You'll get a much better throttle technique out of it :-)

We'll I went ahead with it and changed my C0 settings to +10 on all three options (cylinders?).

I don't really understand what exactly it does, as I haven't read any proper documentation, and I usually prefer not to fiddle with stuff that I don't understand... but seeing that it is such an easy fix, I figured I"ll give it a shot and see if it makes a difference.

After riding this morning to work, I'm still not much wiser. It might have improved the snatchiness a bit, but it's too soon to tell. My ride to work is only 20 minutes, and most of it is on main roads, so I don't really use the delicate off/on throttle control, it's more of a full-blast from one traffic light to the other :-).

I'll give it a few more days, to see if I can feel the difference and then go back to stock settings, that way I'll have a before/after comparison which might help me decide.

If anyone can find some official documentation explaining exactly what these setting do, I'd appreciate seeing it. I initially thought that the three setting (C1-C3) stand for the individual cylinders, hence they should all be set the same, but I'm not sure that's correct. All my info has come from Youtube videos (some in foreign languages that I don't speak), and a couple of posts on forums, mainly referring to other Yamaha bikes. In one place, for a 4 cylinder bike, they mentioned that C1 controls cylinders 1&4, C2 controls 2&3, and another place mentioned that they effect the mixture for different throttle openings

Hi , Not sure if this adjustment can be carried out on FZ 09 s but with MTs and all Euro Yamahas for that matter the CO or Fuel mixtures can be adjusted through the instrument cluster , they are limited but can adjusted none the less , i have adjusted mine 10 digits above standard and has smoothed the throttle snatch in standard mode completely and has made the throttle snatch or off/ on throttle application only slightly noticable in A mode , for those that dont know , there are U tube clips how to change , or search CO Adjustment , i believe for US bikes they need a jumper wire to perform , i eventually settled on 15 digits above standard which my factory settings were 0 for all 3 cylinders , if anyone has access to a gas analyzer it would be great to know what the idle mixtures are when changing settings as the setting range is between -128 and + 126 , cheers

How do you access the diagnostic menu? I had a look in the manual last night but couldn't find anything on what you're talking about.
Thanks

Julian,

Have a read through the thread, there is loads of gold corn to be picked. It is not documented in the standard manual.
On page 2, there is links to some youtube videos.

Have in mind, there is no "Reset back to factory settings" so don't mess around too much.
Write down all the values before changing them, and to what you have changed them to, so you can eventually revert...

To access Co/Diag menu. Hold down both select/reset buttons. Turn key so dash comes on. Keep holding till diag appears. Press select to show Co. Hold down both buttons and 1 will appear. If you press select it will run through 1 then 2 then 3 cylinder. On each of these hold down both buttons till 0 appears. Now you can play. Once done on that cylinder press both buttons and repeat for all.

Going back the the original post of putting a spacer on the throttle grip to limit the lateral movement. I installed my heated grips yesterday and when glueing the new grip on, i slid it along the shaft as far as possible which eliminated about 80% of the lateral play. So taking off and reinstalling your grips will also help with lateral play, as well as adding the washer/spacer.

So.....just been and had a little look at the CO settings on my bike and C1, C2 and C3 were all set to 14. Now I was under the impression that the factory setting was 0 like everyone has been saying theirs was b4 they played with it. Anyone else had a setting that wasn't 0 b4 they started ? Wud b interested to know what it was.

Having changed the CO settings to 15 yesterday (factory setting was 14 for some reason)! I decided to change them to 0 on all 3 cylinders for the journey back from work this afternoon and found that although it was a tad jerky in A mode it had bags more grunt (if that is possible lol)! and the fuel consumption improved quite a bit.

So backing them down to 0 leans the mixture then. Marthy was saying in another post that when a straight through exhaust is installed the bike runs too lean. The fuel controller he sells corrects that and adds more fuel to compensate. It also smooths the throttle a lot, so i should think if you go up in numbers it should help with the throttle?

Yes it does help with the throttle but not enuf to make a massive difference (to me anyway)! The difference was the power..! Yes it comes up VERY easy but after changing it to 0 it was comin up when it usually wudnt and it generally felt more like it wanted to "make some progress"! Lol. Will see how it goes tho and keep u posted. Gonna get it on the dyno on Friday after it's had some new tyres put on and a few more trick bits

So had the bike on the dyno today and the optimum setting for the CO (with the Akro and baffle out) was 14. Runs so smoothly now so no more snatchy throttle in any of the modes

I have also heard the the throttle position sensor can be adjusted to overcome a few problems.Throttle mod/ECU - Page 2 . Have a look there if you can be assed giving it a go. My temperament and stamina don't extend. Plus I've sorted mine to where I like. Also I hear a hammer can fix alot.

What was the A/F readings on the dyno before and after the changes? also what power and torque did it put out? :) was there any difference in power playing with the settings?
