There are quite a few places to hook around under the passenger seat - the cargo net hooks will reach the frame of the bike, also the passenger footpeg has a very suitable place to hook onto and the net reaches that. I have strapped a lid on the back of mine a few times, doing exactly what you do.

The R1 is a pretty hard core track bike. Feet are up and back, handlebars are well forward and down - they'd be about where the indicators are on the MT07. The handling is much more solid than the MT, I suppose partly because of the stiff frame, and also the centre of gravity is much lower...
