Get the long one, you can always wrap it around something twice, but it gives you more scope if parkng is awkward and you need to be further from a solid object. Whichever one you get will be a pain in the arse to lug about, the long one is only 20% more of a pain. (Edit) just a thought -...

I'd be tempted to take it off and clean it. The grease will quite quickly burn off, but I'm not sure what would be left behind with copper grease. You definitely don't want to grease pipe joints, but I'm probably stating the obvious now.

I think I got it the wrong way round. Just do the opposite. Wind the bar end adjuster right in and take up the free play from the other end. Maybe I'm still misunderstanding though. If it's still at a wonky angle, something must be wrong, because mine goes in completely straight at the bar...

It's possible it's just misaligned, and can be sorted with a rubber mallet. If something major is bent, then it could be an insurance claim. I'd check the bars first, do a bit of measuring, it's possible the right side has been bent where it hit the ground. That'll cost you £40 for a new pair.
